About This Program

Join our Accessibility Teaching Media Bootcamp 2025 and take your teaching to the next level. This bootcamp is designed to help educators create inclusive, engaging, and accessible learning materials that empower every student to succeed, regardless of their abilities or background. Through a mix of expert-led sessions, hands-on practice, and real-world case studies, you’ll leave with the confidence and tools to design learning experiences that truly make a difference.

Purpose

The purpose of AHEC of a Summer is to expose high school students to the realities of health care professions through hands-on learning and observation. The program helps students make informed decisions about their academic and career pathways in medicine.

Value

Participants gain early exposure to professional health care environments that cannot be replicated in a classroom setting. This experience adds long-term value by enhancing college readiness and clarifying career goals.

Benefits

Students earn ½ high school AHEC elective credit, CPR certification, and valuable volunteer hours. Additional benefits include mentorship, career exploration, and skills that strengthen college and scholarship applications.

Curriculum

What You’ll Learn

Our 4-week curriculum is designed to guide you step by step in mastering accessible teaching media. Each week combines theory, practice, and real-world applications so you can implement accessibility in your own classroom with confidence
Week 1 – Foundations of Accessibility

Learn the core principles of accessibility in education, why it matters, and how it impacts learners. You’ll explore accessibility standards (WCAG, ADA) and understand how inclusive design improves learning outcomes for all students.

You’ll learn:

  • Why accessibility is essential in education
  • Key accessibility laws and standards (WCAG, ADA)
  • The impact of inclusive teaching on different learner groups
  • Common barriers faced by students and how to identify them

Dive into the practical side of creating accessible teaching materials. You’ll learn about text alternatives, color contrast, typography, and multimedia design techniques to ensure your content is clear and engaging.

You’ll learn:

  • Designing with proper color contrast and font choices
  • Adding alternative text for images and graphics
  • Making documents, slides, and PDFs accessible
  • Creating captions and transcripts for video/audio materials

Discover how to make your lessons more interactive while keeping accessibility at the center. This week covers accessible tools for activities, gamification strategies, and how to build learning experiences that include every student.

You’ll learn:

  • Using accessible digital tools for interactivity
  • Gamification techniques with inclusivity in mind
  • Designing quizzes and assignments that work for all learners
  • Building collaborative activities accessible to diverse needs

Put everything together with hands-on projects. You’ll work on designing your own accessible teaching media, receive feedback, and learn best practices for testing and maintaining accessibility in long-term teaching.

You’ll learn:

  • Applying accessibility principles in real teaching projects
  • Tools to test accessibility in your materials
  • How to collect feedback from students for improvements
  • Building a sustainable accessibility-first teaching strategy

Typically in June or July, with some hospital sites beginning in May after the last day of school in their parish.

Students are provided with scrubs to be worn each day throughout the duration of the program. Only scrubs provided by CLAHEC may be worn. In addition to the scrubs, students may wear a neutral-colored undershirts (black, white, tan, grey). Students MUST wear socks and closed toe shoes, minimal jewelry throughout the program. Hoodies and sweatshirts are not permitted.

In order to comply with the Louisiana Department of Education and course requirements set by the state of Louisiana, students must attend all identified program dates.

Students are not permitted to use their personal cell phones during the program day. Students will turn in phones in the morning. Students will have the opportunity to use their personal cell phones at lunch, but must turn them in again after lunch prior to the afternoon sessions. Parent/Guardian will have access to an alternate number to be able to communicate emergency information to their child during the program.

Transportation for this program is not provided. Students must have adequate transportation to and from the hospital site daily, in addition to a mode of transportation for any local field trips during the program. Transportation is provided only on the full day field trip.
